1、“in”後接的都是較長時間

（1）表示“在某世紀/某年代/特定世紀某年代/年/季節/月”

Eg: This machine was invented in the eighteenth century.

這臺機器是在18世紀發明的。

This incident happened in the 1970s.

該事件發生在20世紀70年代。

She came to this city in 1980.

他於1980年來到這個城市。

It often rains here in summer.

夏天這裡常常下雨。

（2）表示“從現在起一段時間以後”，(in+一段時間表將來)

Eg: I will be back in a month.

我將在一個月後回來。

（3）泛指一般意義的上、下午、晚上

Eg: Don't watch TV too much in the evening.

晚上看電視不要太多。

當morning, evening, afternoon被of短語修飾，習慣上應用on, 而不用in.

Eg: on the afternoon of August 1st

但若前面的修飾詞是 early, late時，雖有of短語修飾，習慣上應用in, 而不用on.

Eg: in the early morning of September 10th

在9月10的上午

in the late afternoon of September 12th

在9月12日的傍晚

2、“on” 後接的時間多與日期有關

（1）表示“在具體的某一天”或 （在具體的某一天的）早上、中午、晚上”，或“在某一天或某一天的上午，下午，晚上”等

Eg: They left on a rainy morning.

他們是在一個雨天的早上離開的。

（2）表示“在星期幾”或“在星期幾的早上、中午、晚上”等

Eg: I heard this story on Saturday morning.

我是在星期六的早晨聽到這個故事的。

注意：“在週末”: at weekends, on weekends.

“在工作日”： on weekdays

on the weekend, at the weekend加了定冠詞the, 是特指的那個週末，表示某個固定的週末；on weekends, at weekends是一般性的每個週末。

（3）表示“在某一節假日、生日”

Eg: on my birthday

注意： at, on都可用來表示“節假日”，但at側重指“休假的時節”，而不是指具體的哪一天；on側重指具體的時日，與它連用的短語中多含“Day”

at New Year(在新年期間) at Christmas (在聖誕節期間) on New Year’s Day(在元旦那天) on Christmas Day (在聖誕節)

3、“at” 後接的時間最短

（1）表示“某一具體時刻（即幾點幾分時）”時，用於鐘點時刻前，

Eg: He gets up at six o'clock every day.

他每天六點起床。

（2）用在特定的時候（時節、時機），表示一瞬間或短暫的時間

Eg: They were happy at that time.

他們那時很幸福。

at that moment（在那一瞬間） at that time（那時）

（3）用於表示進餐時間。

Eg: at breakfast/lunch/supper

在早餐時/午餐時/晚餐時

（4）表示“在……歲”。

Eg: At the age of nine ,the boy could swim well.

在九歲的時候，這孩子就游泳遊得很好了。

（5）表示“在中午、在夜晚、在週末”時，須用介詞at。

Eg: at noon /night /midnight

at sunrise (日出時) at dusk (黃昏), at dawn /daybreak (黎明)

Eg: You can see many stars in the sky at night.

夜晚你能看到天空中有許多星星。

省略介詞的情況 ：

1．next, last, this, that與時間名詞連用作狀語時，該短語前常省略介詞。

Eg: We’re going to work on a farm next Sunday.

下個星期天，我們要去農場勞動。

today, tomorrow, yesterday, the day before yesterday, the day after tomorrow, tomorrow night等之前不用任何介詞。

Eg: Are you free tomorrow night?
