在去年11月的一次實驗中，EAST的溫度達到了1億攝氏度，為太陽核心溫度的6倍多，而太陽核心的最高溫度在1500萬攝氏度左右。這是一個關鍵的里程碑。
這一成就被認為是中國尋找廉價清潔能源的里程碑。

為了讓聚變產生能量，離子的溫度必須超過1億攝氏度，因此正在開發一種比EAST更強大、更先進的裝置。

科學家們認為，核聚變發生在1億攝氏度的高溫下，會導致帶電的氘和氚粒子聚集在一起，爆發巨大的能量。
