know that…是知道某事；know +間接問句，是對後面的疑問知道答案。
例如：
Do you know when we should go there? 你知道我們該什麼時候到那邊去嗎？
I don’t know (I’d like to know) whether he passed the examination.
我不知道（我想知道）他考試是不是及格了。
know that必須是說話者認為真確的事實，所以邏輯上不能說I don’t know that…，
但可以說I don’t know whether…
如果說話者明明知道that從句的內容是錯誤的，也不能說know that——
例如不能說：
John knows that the capital of Australia is Sydney.
但是可以說：John believes that the capital of Australia is Sydney.

I don’t know that I agree.
I don’t know that I’ll attend the meeting.
She didn’t know whether/if she was right or wrong.

以上動詞也可以跟任何疑問詞（包括why）或that引導的從句：
I don’t know why the accident happened.
我不知道為什麼發生了事故。
I didn’t know that there had been an accident.
我不知道曾發生過一起事故。

在否定結構中，know可跟由that, whether或if引導的從句：
I don’t know that/whether/if he can come.
但是，I don’t know that he can come與I don’t know whether/if he can come語義有別。
前者意思相當於I doubt that he can come，只是語義較為委婉。
這樣看來I don’t know that…的英語表達當然可以成立，只不過表示的含義並不是中文的意義，而相當於I’m not sure…或I doubt that…類似結構的語義。
