前言
焦作地處黃河以北，太行山以南，古稱覃懷、河內、山陽，歷史悠久，人文薈萃，是中華文明的發祥地之一。焦作文化遺產豐富，現有全國重點文物保護單位27處；焦作名人輩出，是卜商、司馬懿、韓愈、許衡、朱載墒、陳王廷等歷史名人的故里。古代焦作歷史文物陳列以歷史進程為脈絡，以出土文物為基礎，輔以重大歷史事件、重要人物和歷史遺蹟相貫穿，以期讓觀眾對古代焦作有一個全面的瞭解和認識。

隋唐五代時期
公元581年—公元960年
隋唐時期，焦作地區分屬河北道懷州河內郡、河南府河南郡。焦作地處東都洛陽、北通山西、河北的咽喉，也是華北通往陝西長安的樞紐，戰略位置十分重要。安史之亂中，郭子儀、李光弼奉命募兵平叛，有不少戰鬥就發生在河陽(今焦作孟州市)境內。杜甫詩《石壕吏》所言“急應河陽役”和《新婚別》所說:“ 守邊赴河陽”，指的就是今天的孟州。

宋金元時期
公元960年—公元1368年
公元960年，北宋建立。1271年元朝建立，實現了中國新的大統一。宋金時期，焦作地區分屬懷州和孟州，元代建立後，初設懷孟路，後改懷慶路。這一時期焦作經濟、文化持續發展；煤炭開採、瓷器燒造日益興旺。修武當陽峪窯是著名的民間瓷窯，是北方瓷器燒造的重要基地。墓葬多出土雜劇雕磚及壁畫，戲曲藝術發展的雛形逐步形成。
