LESSON 190 catch a cold 感冒
NO01 Petercaught a cold from one of his classmates at school.
彼特在學校被同學傳染了感冒。

catch 在這個短語是作“感染”的意思。除了 catch a cold 之外，have a cold 和 catch the flu 也有近似的意思。
此外，catch 還有別的用法。例如，我們可以說：
● My stomach feels funny; I think I caughtsomething.
我覺得肚子怪怪的，我想我大概吃壞肚子了。
● Kathy caught a bad chill during wintervacation.
凱西寒假時得了嚴重的風寒。
另外，sick 與 ill 和 catch a cold 的差別在哪裡呢？
catch a cold 尤指“感冒”，但 sick 或 ill 都是“人不舒服”的意思。
那 catch a bad cold 又是什麼意思呢？
這個短語就是指“病得很重”的意思。這個短語和 catch (one's) death 意思相同。所以下面三個例句都用來指病得很不舒服。

從上面的例句，我們知道 catch (one's) breath 這個短語可以用在生理的休息（如運動後），也可以用在心理上的休息（如從繁忙的生活或是繁重的功課中喘息一下）。
在第三和第四個例句中，我們也可以用 take five 和 take a break 去取代catch (one's) breath ！
此外，take five 也可以指“生理上的休息”，例如，拍戲時，導演說 cut! Let's take five，意思就是“卡！休息五分鐘”。

catch (someone's) eye 是指“吸引（某人）的注意；抓住（某人）的目光”。catch 在這裡是“吸引”的意思，尤其是用在“引起（某人）的興趣、注意”上。請注意這個短語中的eye 須用單數。這個短語也有形容詞的用法，eye-catching就是用來指“（某事物）非常引人注目”。
下列幾個短語與 catch (someone's) eye 意思相近：
● catch (someone's) attention
● attract (someone's) attention
● get (someone's) attention
至於為什麼 eye 是用單數而不是用複數呢？我們可以這樣想：一隻眼睛被別的東西吸引，還要留另一隻眼睛看路才不會撞到電線杆，所以記得，eye 要用單數哦！

catch 在這裡是“陷入，困住”的意思，這個短語常用被動式，和 trap 意思相近。英文中另一個和 catch inthe middle of 意思相同的短語是 be caught in the crossfire。其中，crossfire是指“交相指責；交相責問”的意思。
下面 catch 的用法，意思和上面的短語很像，但要注意的是，在這裡常用被動式哦！
● He won't be here on time, because he iscaught in traffic.
他沒辦法準時到因為他遇到堵車了。
上面例句的 catch 意思是“碰上，遭遇（惡劣或是麻煩的情況）”。而下面的例句中，catch 是指“需要時恰巧缺乏或是沒有”的意思。
● Tiffany was caught without any savings.
蒂法妮在急需用錢的時候，剛好一毛都沒有。

NO01 The storm caught us off guard; we had nocoats or umbrellas.
這場暴風雨下得讓我們措手不及；我們剛好沒帶雨衣或雨傘。
NO02 The soldiers caught their enemy off guard.
士兵們把敵人冷不防逮個正著。

catch off guard 是指“在沒有心理準備的情況下，讓（某人）措手不及；出乎意料”的意思。catch napping 是它的相似詞。
讀者可能對 catch off guard 感到陌生，但是在美式英語中頗為常用。使用這個短語的時候，記得要在 catch 之後加（someone）是讓（某人）措手不及的意思。這個短語可以用主動態，也可以用被動態。
catch off guard 在新聞英語中也十分常用。我們可以一起看看下面的例子。

catch on 作“瞭解”用的時候，常常是指聽得懂別人說的笑話（appreciate a joke），或是瞭解別人的弦外之音（understandthe point he makes），例如上面的第一個例句。我們再多加一個例句，幫助讀者 "catch on！"

沒人瞭解小強的英式幽默感。
要注意的是，catch on 中的 on 作副詞用，後面接賓語時，須先加 to。
而在第二個例句中，catch on 就是 understand 的意思。
第三個例句及第四個例句則是指“（某事）大受歡迎或是十分流行。”這個短語用英文解釋可以說 (something) becomes very popular。

NO01 The man was just stealing the money when thepolice saw him; he was caught red-handed.
這個男人在偷錢的時候被警察看到；他當場被逮到。

金米當場抓到她兒子偷吃餅乾。

red-handed 引申為“滿手是血”的意思，所以 catch red-handed 字面上是“（某人）作案後滿手血跡，作了案還沒來得及洗去手上的血（或毀屍滅跡），就被抓到了”。就是強調“現行犯被當場逮到”的意思。
要注意的是，使用這個短語的時候，catch 後面要加 (someone)，表示“把（某人）逮個正著”的意思。
此外，這個短語也可以用被動態，英文也可以說 (someone) be caught red-handed。
下列是和 red-handed 意思相近的短語：

另外一個和 catch sight of 意思相似的短語是 catch a glimpseof。glimpse 是“須臾一瞥，瞥見”的意思。如果我們要說“老師用眼睛一瞟，就發現肖恩考試作弊。”英文的表達方式是out of the corner of the her eye, the teachercaught a glimpse of Sean cheating on the test，而“我瞥見了布拉德·彼特”英文是：Icaught a glimpse of Brad Pitt。
catch a glimpse of 還可以表示看到未來的走向，或是未來的發展。例如，when my boss was talking about the history of Eastbay Tech,I caught a glimpse of the company's future。（當我的老闆談到東灣科技的歷史時，我看到了這家公司的未來。）而 astronomers caught a glimpse of the Sun's future 的意思是“天文學家看到了太陽的未來”

讀者可能會疑惑，catch up 後面什麼時候要用 with，什麼時候又要用 up 呢？
