而另外兩個表示“部門”的單詞 — department 和 division。首先，department 和 division 包含與“企業、組織的內部結構”相關的意思，如“部門、科、室”等。相比之下，division 所在的組織或公司規模可能比 department 要大。比如，一些跨國公司會把不同的分支叫做“divisions”。
不過，究竟是用 department 還是 division 為特定的部門命名，到頭來還要看公司自己的決定。比如，某個企業的“銷售部”的英文名稱可能是“the sales division”，但叫成 “the sales department”也一點不奇怪；再如，很多公司會把“人力資源部”或“人事部”叫做“the HR department”，也有的企業把它叫成“the HR division”。例如：

（3）The role of our marketing department is to promote the company’s business and products. 我們市場部的角色是推廣公司的業務和產品。
Department 有很多與“機構、組織、企業”有關的意思，但 division 卻沒有。比如，我們會把高等院校中某學科所屬的“院系”叫做 department。比如“工程系 the Department of Engineering”、“哲學系 the Department of Philosophy”、“歷史系 the Department of History”等等。例如：
（1）How many departments are there in this university? 這所大學共有多少個院系？
（2）I study behavioural science at the Department of Psychology. 我在心理學院攻讀行為科學。
有時，單詞 department 也可以用在政府機構的名稱中，可以理解為“部、局、處”。舉個例子來說，英國衛生部的名稱是“the Department of Health”，英國教育部則是“the Department for Education”。最後，大型百貨商場裡，售賣不同商品的部門也可以叫做“department”，比如“男裝部 men’s department”、“家居部 home department”等等。
