奧斯卡·王爾德（Oscar Wilde，1854年—1900年），19世紀英國最偉大的作家與藝術家之一，以其劇作、詩歌、童話和小說聞名。
他的長篇小說《道連·格雷的畫像》等，以及戲劇作品《溫德米爾夫人的扇子》《莎樂美》等，堪稱一時之絕唱。建立起以享樂主義為基礎的唯美主義思想，併成為英國唯美主義的代表人物。
王爾德的人生充滿了各種驚心動魄的怪誕悲喜劇。
20歲出頭，他就以服裝惹眼、談吐機智、特立獨行等特點在倫敦社交界有了名氣。
在40歲前後的那幾年，他的每一部戲劇作品都受到熱烈的歡迎，曾有一個時期，倫敦的舞臺上竟同時上演著他的三部作品。他的作品得到了觀眾及評論家的雙重肯定，王爾德因此達到了人生及藝術的巔峰。
就在這時，他同性戀人（“波西”）的父親將他告上法庭，王爾德敗訴，因“同其他男子發生有傷風化的肉體關係”而被捕，被判有罪，在監獄服了兩年苦役。一下子從風光無限的人生贏家變為身敗名裂的階下囚。
在服刑期間，王爾德還經歷了喪母、破產、離婚等打擊。文學界的大多數朋友都對他避之唯恐不及，只有寥寥數人如蕭伯納仍挺身維護他。
1900年，出獄三年後，機智善嘲諷的王爾德在一家小旅館淒涼去世，年僅 46 歲。
他曾經說：“死亡和庸俗是十九世紀僅有的無法用巧辯逃避的東西（Death and vulgarity are the only two facts in the nineteenth century that one cannot explain away.）。”
幸好他在二十世紀的第一年就死掉了，不然他會發現，一百多年過去了，一切並未改變。
所以，我們仍然需要王爾德的毒舌，來抵抗今天的庸俗。
