“good table”居然是指“菜不錯”，還有這些表達也很有趣！

很久很久以前，在說到“免費”的各種表達時，大白提到過一個很有趣的表達方式，就是“on the house”，那如何理解on the house是免費的意思呢？

要知道on在有些口語表達中有“pay the money”的意思，比如說“It's on me”意思是“我請客；我來付；我來承擔一切；由我來付”，相當於“I'll pay for you/I'll foot the bill”。而the house在口語表達中可以指代“the management/the establishment”,比如說“the house always wins”是指莊總是贏家，所以如果某店家對你說某某東西“on the house”，是指由商家承擔費用，換言之就是“免費”。

好了，說完了“on the house”，我們再來說說一個與其結構類似的表達，你可能也容易理解錯，就是“on the table”。

on the table

table是“桌子”的意思，那on the table是啥呢？其可以翻譯成“在桌子上”，這是最簡單直白的理解，但是這還有其他意思。

例句：

（1）This is one of the best packages we've put on the table in years

這是我們幾年來提交的最好的幾套方案之一。

（2）In today's meeting, there're several new proposals on the table.

在今天的會議上，有好幾個新建議被提出來討論。

瞭解了“on the table”的意思，我們再來說說幾個與“table”有關的表達。

1、good table

不是“好桌子”，而是指“菜不錯”，因為table除了桌子外，還能是“飯菜”的意思。

例句：That restaurant has good tables.

那家餐館的菜不錯。

2、under the table

不是 “在桌子下面”，而是指“祕密的；喝醉；爛醉如泥” 。

例句：

（1）We'll be under the table if we drink all that wine in one night.

要是我們一個晚上把那些酒全部喝光，我們會醉倒的。

（2）Of course all of these were under the table.

當然所有的這一切都是在悄悄中進行的。

3、round table

不是“圓桌”，而是“多人間的公開討論；協商會議”。

例句：

（1）I'm not aware of the IPR round table meeting you mentioned.

關於你提到的知識產權協商會議，我不瞭解具體情況。

（2）We all need to get together and have a round table to come up with a solution to this problem.

我們需要一起公開討論並且提出這個問題的解決方法。

4、put food on the table

不是 “把食物放在桌子上” ，而是“養家餬口”，這是一個美國俚語，另外“brings home the bacon”也是“養家餬口”的意思。

例句：

（1）With my hours at work being cut so dramatically,I just don't know how I'll be able to put food on the table.

我的工作被大幅消減，這樣下去我都不知道怎麼養家餬口了。

（2）I have to go to work because it brings home the bacon .

我得去工作，因為它能使我賺錢餬口。
