如果你知道或者看見某人擁有某物，可以用could或may來進行禮貌地提問。在一些非正式場合中，也可以用can。在過去，在要求獲得某物的時候並不會用到can，它只會在表示能力時才使用。在英國，劍橋大學出版的英語教學材料中，就用到了can you lend me（你能借給我）、can I have（我能······）等句型。在美國，這種形式仍被認為是錯誤的，人們更傾向於使用May I have…（我能·······）。
