CBU/CAR organized its Monthly Automotive Salon (MAS) tonight in Shanghai with a theme of Future of Automotive Cockpit and Seating Innovation.
Steve T. Gamache, vice president of Asia Seating Engineering of Lear Corp. and Sergio Loureiro, interior design director of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., shared their perspectives
Gamache said during his presentation that for SAE Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous vehicles, seating system still needs to primarily be a safety system but Level 4 is where we will see the most significant innovation in the seating & cockpit system. Lear is working on a number of innovations in lightweight seating, craftsmanship and appearance, as well as intelligent seating including technology modules such as Dynamic Safety, Personalized Comfort, Personal Network and BioBridge.
Loureiro said in his presentation that his job as interior director for Chery is to create an interior design DNA specific to Chery and one of the innovations shown at Chery’s Tiggo Coupe Concept vehicle at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show is the so-called “4D” dynamic seating incorporating features such as individual sound systems in the headrests. Chery also introduced a new innovative asymmetrical layout of air vents in its latest production Tiggo 5 SUV that is quite Chery specific.
In the Q&A session, both speakers believe that seating innovation will come out of China for global applications because of unique requirements of the Chinese market and Chinese consumers and seats of the future will still have huge room to improve and optimize as far as light weighting is concerned. Additional topics on OEM-seating supplier relationship, competition, the rise of Chinese brands and seating material innovation were discussed.
A detailed round up of the event will appear in our June issue of China Automotive Review (CAR).
